Parma climbs the urban sustainability rankings thanks to effective environmental policies and targeted investments
Parma reached an important milestone in 2024, ranking third in the “Urban Ecosystem” report by Legambiente, created in collaboration with Ambiente Italia and Il Sole 24 Ore. The Urban Ecosystem aims to monitor and promote urban sustainability, providing a detailed picture of the environmental health of provincial capitals. The report evaluates cities on 20 indicators distributed in six thematic areas: air, water, waste, mobility, urban environment and energy. Each indicator has a specific weight that contributes to the final score, allowing a ranking of the most virtuous cities to be drawn up.
Parma’s third position represents a significant improvement over its 18th place in 2023. Among the measures for more sustainable mobility, Parma has expanded the network of cycle paths, introduced electric buses and expanded bike-sharing stations, making travel greener and more accessible. On the waste front, the city has strengthened its separate waste collection system, achieving recycling rates among the highest in Italy. Parma has also implemented energy efficiency projects in public and private buildings, promoting the use of renewable energy. For example, many schools and municipal offices have been equipped with solar panels, reducing energy consumption and CO2 emissions.
This achievement is the fruit of a series of concrete measures that reflect the commitments made within the “Parma 2030 Climate Neutral” project, which aims to make the city one of the first in Europe to achieve climate neutrality by 2030.
The result obtained by Parma in the 'Urban Ecosystem 2024' report highlights how targeted environmental policies and sustainable investments can transform a city, making it more liveable and respectful of the environment.
