In Sorbolo Mezzani, in the province of Parma, a new peri-urban forestry project has been implemented thanks to the collaboration between Smeg, the KilometroVerdeParma Forestry Consortium and the Emilia-Romagna Region.
This project, part of the regional call “Let's put down roots for the future,” led to the creation of Bosco Smeg, a green area of approximately 8,160 m2, in which 766 native trees and shrubs were planted.
Benefits and Collaboration
The variety of species planted, including field maple, ash, oak, poplar, linden, wild cherry, mulberry, hazel, dog rose, privet and viburnum, was chosen to maximize ecosystem benefits. These include carbon sequestration, air purification, local climate regulation, creation of habitats for biodiversity and reduction of stormwater runoff.
A drip irrigation system and care and maintenance interventions will ensure the
optimal plant growth in the coming years.
Environmental and Social Impact
According to the KilometroVerdeParma Consortium, the Smeg Forest will sequester over 700 tons of CO2
in the next fifty years. This project demonstrates how collaboration between the public and private sectors
can significantly contribute to environmental sustainability, improving the urban landscape and preserving local animal and plant biodiversity. Bosco Smeg represents an investment for the future, contributing to environmental protection and ensuring a better quality of life for present and future generations.
