Interreg NEXT MED: a green future for the Mediterranean

The European programme Interreg NEXT MED promotes transnational cooperation in the Mediterranean to address climate challenges by financing innovative projects for a low-carbon future.

The European Union's Interreg NEXT MED programme finances collaborative and scalable solutions for a low-carbon and climate-resilient Mediterranean. Key areas include energy efficiency, circular economy, climate adaptation and sustainable water management.

Eligibility Criteria

Public bodies, non-governmental organisations, research institutes, universities and private companies located in the countries participating in the programme can apply. A minimum partnership of three participating countries is required, including at least one Mediterranean Partner Country (Cyprus, Egypt, Israel, Lebanon, Jordan, Palestine, Tunisia, Algeria and Turkey – MPC countries) and one European Union Mediterranean country (France, Greece, Italy, Malta, Portugal, Spain – EUMC).

Financeable activities

The call supports two types of projects:

Green Transformation Projects:

  • Development and testing of low-carbon demonstration or pilot solutions.
  • Scaling existing solutions to demonstrate their effectiveness and impact.

Eco-Youth Projects:

  • Direct involvement of young people in design and implementation.
  • Promoting youth action for the green transition.
Budget and financing

The programme has a total budget of 83.7 million Euros. The European Union contribution can cover up to 89% of the eligible costs, requiring beneficiaries to co-finance at least 11% of the total costs. In addition, at least 50% of the eligible costs must be allocated to activities in the Mediterranean partner countries.

Financing limits:

Green Transformation Projects:

  • Minimum EU contribution: €1,780,000.
  • Maximum EU contribution: €3,115,000.
  • Total maximum eligible cost: €3,500,000

Eco-Youth Projects:

  • Minimum EU contribution: €623,000.
  • Maximum EU contribution: €1,780,000.
  • Total maximum eligible cost: €2,000,000
How to Apply

Applications must be submitted online through the official portal of the programme. Projects will be evaluated based on relevance, technical quality, expected impact, sustainability and project management capacity.

To facilitate the search for partners and the building of transnational partnerships, the #MEDCONNECT platform is available.
